Heading out on vacation

North Carolina Mountains

Just a real quick post to let you know that I’m heading to the NC Mountains today and won’t be back until July 9th. Don’t worry though, thanks to some blogger friends I have a few guest posts scheduled for you to read while I am away.

I hope everyone has a wonderful and relaxing fourth of July weekend!

Walmart: There is a price for cheap

I have this love/hate relationship with Walmart. I love the fact that they have pretty much everything you could ever want all in one place. I find their stores easy to navigate and the their overall selection excellent. Their prices are hard to beat as well. While they aren’t always cheaper on everything, I’ve seldom found any local store offering a lower price than Walmart.

My wife loves Walmart. We have a supercenter literally 5 minutes from our house which is both convenient and dangerous. My wife even does our primary grocery shopping their due to the low prices.

One year of gathering little by little

Happy Birthday

Exactly one year ago today, I brought Gather Little by Little online. I had been blogging for about two months on a personal blog that I started just so I could play around with two blogging software packages (WordPress and Drupal). I wrote articles about various things, but mainly personal finance topics, more to document what I was learning than to share any insights with anyone.

Mr. Rebates Review

Mr. Rebates Logo

Rebate sites are something fairly new to me and I recently wrote up a review of Ebates which I’ve used a few times and have been very happy with. A reader added a comment to my Ebates article suggesting that I check out a competing site call Mr. Rebates. Always on the look out for great money saving ideas and strategies I signed up. I’m glad I did.

Sunday Lyrics – This is home

Bandmember pictures

Switchfoot is an American alternative rock band from San Diego, California. Band members are Jon Foreman (vocals, guitar), Tim Foreman (bass guitar, backing vocals), Chad Butler (drums, percussion), Jerome Fontamillas (guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), and Drew Shirley (guitar). Swithfoot has Christian themed music but shuns the “Christian” music label, as they want to heard and listened to by everyone and not placed in a particular box.

Their music has been featured in a few movies, including A walk to remember and more recently The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian where this song can be heard towards the end of the movie.

Arming Yourself

This is a guest article by Otherdeb (Deb Wunder). Deb is a 55-year-old writer who lives in Brooklyn, New York. In addition to her writing (she is a published short story writer, and has a blog called The Dangling Conversation), she makes beaded jewelry and knits (and takes commissions for both), reads anything she can get her hands on, and gets paid to keep a high school cafeteria under control ten months a year. She is between half and three quarters of the way to becoming debt-free.

The Friday Gathering – Need some advice edition

Front Porch

My wife and I were having a discussion last night about our house. As many of you know, we’ve been casually looking around for another home. We’re looking to move out in the country in a house with some land. I say we’ve been casually looking, as we can’t really sell our house right now. We have a whole list of things that need to be done before its ready to sell: repainting, repairing some interior molding, new carpet, and some other minor things. The big problem is the major items on the outside.

Ask me anything #3rd edition

Each week I give the readers of Gather Little by Little a chance to ask me anything. The only real rule is that I can decline to answer. I’ll do my best to answer as many questions as I can though. Have a question you would like answered? Just drop me a line or leave a comment!

I received two questions since last weeks Ask me Anything post. The first questions is from Emily who wrote:

Sometimes it's just better to pay someone

This is more of a story than a financial lesson, but hopefully you’ll enjoy it. It does come to a personal finance topic at the end, so hang in there.

Our house is about 15 years old now. Things are beginning to fail, the roof is getting old, and it seems like there is something constantly requiring repair. This is particularly true of the siding and trim, since our house doesn’t have vinyl siding. Replacing the rotten or bowed wood is a constant battle but one I generally don’t mind doing. I’m fairly good with my hands and enjoy the labor and satisfaction of doing the repairs myself.

You might want to invest in a locking gas cap

Filler up

Don’t have a locking gas cap? You just might want to consider getting one. As gas prices are rising, so are the number of reported thefts of gas from people’s cars. Armed with siphon hoses, drills and even weapons, gas thieves are on the hunt for your gas.

MSNBC recently ran a story that told a story about a tanker driver named Bobby Lee Julien whose gas tanker was stolen at gun point. While the tanker was finally recovered, authorities believe the gas in the tanker was destined for the black market.
