You are right with "Too good to be true": Be careful when the business model does not make sense...

Be attentive to the Red Flags. There are certain basic due diligence practices. For example funds shrouded in secrecy and closely guarded (secrecy is a classic component of a Ponzi scheme) and not subject to independent, high quality verification (Madoff was using of a small auditing firm, Friehling & Horowitz, which has only one active accountant auditing Madoff’s multi-billion dollar operation)...

Definitely a good reminder. Can you imagine losing all your retirement one day through non fault of your own?

"Does Bernie Madoff Win In The End?" is the title of one of my posts. The answer is YES. He wins, we lose.

As a person working in the financial world, I highly suggest that there is a 3rd party involved in your transactions. This means a Solid Custodian of all your assets. For example, Charles Schwab, TIAA-CREF, Edward Jones and many othere companies. You may always request a statement from the custoodian and check the trades and balance.

I totally in agreement with no 1. Sometimes family and friends are the ones that encourages downfall. What one should also do before investing is ask his/herself if the interest he/she is getting is true. Ponzi Scheme always offer an higher interest rate than the normal bank. Since the fall of Wall Street a lot of these Scheme has taken a nosedive with persons hard earning money. It is a lesson that moving forward we have to learn from.
