Good post that motivates us to think about our "little" purchases. My best plan for detering these purchases is using the envelope system, but I have found another idea that helps: If I have a larger bill ($50 for example), I try to wait as long as I can before breaking it. Why? Because is seems to disappear much faster once it is broken.

This is my downfall as well. I am in sales, and spend quite a bit of time on the road, and eating on the fly.
I started calculating just how much I was spending on lunch and snacks, sodas and the like and just about had a heart attack! It takes a conscious effort to not spend on the "little things".

Great post! I have just recently started reading personal finance blogs and made a budget for my husband and I. It is difficult for us to talk about savings because we live on very little income while I am still in school. The statement "The point is that most of us in this culture, have a spending problem, not an income problem." gives me hope!

Great post! If you can't manage $10 how can you manage $10,000 - or in this case if you can't manage $1 how can you manage $1,000 - it is all about your behaviours with money!
Great post!

Great post Stew! I used to see how long I could keep a $20 in my wallet. Once I controlled my "little purchases" I felt confident enough to control the big ones.

Great post. I've been thinking about the little costs here and there too. I really think this eats up more of our budget than we think it does. This is where the envelope system helps out a lot! When it's gone, it's gone!
Blessings

stew,

i know about those little foxes that eat the vines...i am in my car a LOT (i deliver newspapers and mow lawns, plus have the added benefit of having the transfer of my son to his dad 8 times a week, and at church more times than i care to count in a week for various things i am involved in there. So needless to say i am OUT of my house a LOT. i end up buying a lot of drinks because of course bringing water with you requires doing stuff ahead of time, like making sure you have a cooler with ice and the klean kanteens are clean! most mornings i don't want to wake up earlier than the last minute, or am unable to. this means that i have the feeling of being rushed out of the house on the way to pick up papers. so yeah, those purchases really add up over time...i am pretty sure that if i took all my purchases that were impulse drinks, over the course of the last month they add up to at least $30 bucks for that time period and i am willing to bet they are probably twice that much. So i am going to learn to plan ahead...that would be the preferable thing...

thanks stew for this article!

Stew,

Excellent post, I have recently found that all those little things add up, but there is a line where you you have to watch out - when you cross over and start, "Being penny wise and pound foolish."
