I've had several arguments in the past with the taxman regarding how some rules should be applied, and while I still think I was legally correct, those episodes made me think:- did I exploit unintentional loopholes just to save a couple of dollars at the expense of the state (which arguably collects the money to provide benefits to society as a whole)? When in doubt, err on the side of generosity!

As they say honesty is always the best policy. It had to be tough to write this post. I hope you feel better having 'come clean'. He recorded our mileage wrong which then it made our income over the EIC limit. We had to pay it all back! Luckily we still had it in a savings account. It's no fun being audited. The number one response we got from family/friends was "Oh no, I hope they don't audit us for____________." ha!
