How about some focus on survivors? It's too easy to put a flower on a grave; It's a lot tougher to visit a VA hospital. To me, it feels like the whole country is ducking responsibility for serious sacrifices made in our names. If you're not up to a hospital visit, at least send a package to someone currently serving, donate to an organization supporting service families or write a letter to your representative in Washington, telling them how important it is to provide adequate care to the veterans who survive, but with life-changing disability. If you know a family with a surviving veteran, do a quiet random act of kindness. The dead no longer feel pain. their survivors and their wounded comrades need us to care about them. Our troops have defended our nation, including not only our values but our standard of living. Although I'm struggling with balancing my finances, I'm fortunate to be blessed with so much. Most of the world struggles just to have enough to eat or get basic services or health care. Such a great reminder.
