Great Article on Trailer sway…. Since 2003… 2,239 people killed, over 120,000 people injured and over 340,000 things damaged by people who tow.

Wow that’s nuts! I’m guessing the husband was in a bit of a state of shock. Seems odd to be more concerned about the car and not fully understanding what happened.

They have the tow ratings for most vehicles and if you’re ever in doubt, check the inside sticker on your tow vehicle’s door or in the glove box. People don’t realize (and irresponsible salespeople should be ashamed) that you really should only tow 75 percent of what your vehicle is rated. Also, that number includes all ALL A-L-L weight in the vehicle (fuel, passengers, driver, luggage, options, as well as the weight of the trailer and the stuff you put in it).

Towing something as large as a camper or trailer is serious business and your post eloquently points that out.

@GetingUp – I almost mentioned the Hensley, but the price was the reason I didn’t. I had a buddy that had one and I really wanted one, but just couldn’t afford it. It’s really sad that such a safe hitch has to cost so much money. For those interested the link is: http://www.hensleymfg.com/
