NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Please do not tithe to somebody you see on television. Your tithe was meant to be a part of your reasonable service. You do no service to somebody on television. You don't even know those people. Yes, you can give them an offering. But your tithe? Nope.

Go to CHURCH, join that church, give your tithe there, give your service there, worship as a body together.

In regards to the last question, I'd balance between putting what's leftover into the mortgage and investments. Yes the market is down right now, that means it's a great time to buy (unless you think the market will never go back up in your lifetime, in which case you should be investing in firearms and tin foil hats). A long term investment is going to return more than you'll save on your fixed mortgage interest rate at this time. Since the inception of the market it has returned about 11% so unless your mortgage rate is 11% or more, the market is a better investment, IMO.

glblguy, have there been any issues with getting your loan for the house you're buying? Supposedly there is a credit freeze/crunch right now but I haven't heard of anyone not being able to get a loan...
