The Friday gathering – I'm back

NC Mountains

We returned on Wednesday from a wonderful week long trip in the North Carolina mountains. We didn’t visit anywhere special, but spent all of our time resting, relaxing, reading, exploring and playing with our kids. We got a little more rain than we would have liked, but our Swiss Gear tent held up great and kept us nice and dry. I can’t recommend Swiss Gear products enough!

I want to take a second and thank the bloggers who wrote some excellent guest posts for me while I was away: rocket from Rocket Finance, FrugalDad, and That One Caveman from One CavemanÂ’s Financial Journey. Also, thanks to Lynnae from Being Frugal who kept an eye on my blog while I was away.

Ask me anything 4th edition

Each week I give the readers of Gather Little by Little a chance to ask me anything. The only real rule is that I can decline to answer. IÂ’ll do my best to answer as many questions as I can though. Have a question you would like answered? Just drop me a line or leave a comment!

I received two questions since last weeks Ask me Anything post. The first questions is from Jennifer who asks:

Ten Benefits of Tithing

Offering Plate

This is a guest post from rocket who blogs over at Rocket Finance and feels finance isn’t rocket science. Rocket writes about kids and money, charitable giving, taxes, coffee and occasional posts about public policy. If you like what you read, make sure you subscribe to Rocket Finance.

I recently came across this list of ten benefits of tithing and I thought it would be nice to share the list with the readers of Gather Little by Little. I have also included Scripture references for you to check out if you desire along with some editorial comments.

Rent Not to own: Why Renting Sometimes Makes More Sense

Motorhome

This is a guest post from Frugual Dad who blogs about taking the “conservative” approach to personal finances. If you like what you read, make sure you head over and subscribe via RSS or email!

The Friday Gathering – On Vacation Edition

Fireworks!

As you read this, I am in the NC Mountains at around 4,000 feet above sea level. No computer, no cell phone reception. Just peace and quiet. If you live in the US, I  hope you’re enjoying the Fourth of July holiday and maybe eating some great food with family and friends.

Since I can’t read all of the great articles from around the personal finance blogosphere, I thought I do a little retro-Gather Little by Little Friday Gathering.

Here are my favorite posts for the past 1 year of Gather Little by Little:

Tips For Surviving the Foreclosure Crisis

This article originally appeared as a guest post on I’ve Paid For This Twice Already…

More than a million homes could potentially face foreclosure this year. This is 30% more than in 2006. People are panicking and looking for anyway out they can. Scammers are making the situation worse and taking advantage of people.

Here’s a few tips:

Know Your Rights

Read over your loan documents and papers. Look on your state’s website and learn about the foreclosure rights in your state.

Heading out on vacation

Just a real quick post to let you know that I’m heading to the NC Mountains today and won’t be back until July 9th. Don’t worry though, thanks to some blogger friends I have a few guest posts scheduled for you to read while I am away.

I hope everyone has a wonderful and relaxing fourth of July weekend!

Walmart: There is a price for cheap

Walmart

I have this love/hate relationship with Walmart. I love the fact that they have pretty much everything you could ever want all in one place. I find their stores easy to navigate and the their overall selection excellent. Their prices are hard to beat as well. While they aren’t always cheaper on everything, I’ve seldom found any local store offering a lower price than Walmart.

My wife loves Walmart. We have a supercenter literally 5 minutes from our house which is both convenient and dangerous. My wife even does our primary grocery shopping their due to the low prices.

One year of gathering little by little

Happy Birthday

Exactly one year ago today, I brought Gather Little by Little online. I had been blogging for about two months on a personal blog that I started just so I could play around with two blogging software packages (WordPress and Drupal). I wrote articles about various things, but mainly personal finance topics, more to document what I was learning than to share any insights with anyone.
