Good point. I work for a company that manages and tracks gift cards and we blog about these issues on savvywallet.com. One thing we have noticed is a lot of times gift cards are lost and unredeemed. It's a huge loss for the retailer, but a bigger lost for consumers. Last year, we spent $100B in gift cards and $8B was never redeemed. I agree with Jim, keep your hands off the credit cards, and use your IRS stimulus to pay off debt. Don't walk into a Kroger store and exchange your stimulus for a !0% bonus so you can purchase more canned beans. And, if you have gift cards spend them now before the company files for bankruptcy or they expire.

Nicely put, Jim. While my credit has been...confusing....Micah's could probably allow us to get some of these promotions. But he has enough debt to make his score lower than we'd like and hurting it with useless cards would be a bad move for us.

That's one reason I like RME and have promoted it on my site - there is no negative impact on your credit score for signing up.

Some really good points here and like you I rarely opt for financial offers that are advertised, because my principle is if they have to advertise the offer it's usually not the best one out there. Interesting Pinyo over at Moolanomy wrote a on a similar subject in December and I think that you both raise some good points.
