For those of you that have been listening to contemporary Christian music for a while, this song will be a blast from the past for you. DC Talk was one of the first groups I discovered when I first began listening to contemporary Christian and I still enjoy listening to them today. Their music had a significant influence on the growth and popularity of contemporary Christian music in the 90s. Below are the lyrics to “In the Light” from their now famous 1995 Jesus Freak album. You can listen to the song here.

I keep trying to find a life
On my own apart from you
I am the king of excuses
I’ve got one for every selfish thing I do

What’s going on inside of me
I despise my own behavior
This only serves to confirm my suspicions
That I’m still a man in need of a Savior

(CHORUS)
I wanna be in the Light
as You are in the Light
I wanna shine like the stars
in the Heavens
Oh, Lord be my light
and be my Salvation
’cause all I want is to be in the Light
All I want is to be in the Light

This disease of self runs through my blood (through my blood)
It’s a cancer fatal to my soul
Every attempt on my behalf has failed
to bring this sickness under control

Tell me what’s going on inside of me
(Whats going on)
I despise my own behavior
(Despise my own behavior)
This only serves to confirm my suspicions
That I’m still a man in need of a Savior

I wanna be in the Light
as You are in the Light
I wanna shine like the stars
in the Heavens
Oh, Lord be my Light
and be my Salvation
’cause all I want is to be in the Light (yeah)
All I want is to be in the Light

(BRIDGE)
Honesty becomes me
[There’s nothing left to lose]
The secrets that did run me
[Your presence have defused]
Pride has no position
[As riches have no worth]
The fame that once did cover me
[Has been sentenced to this Earth]
Has been sentenced to this Earth

Tell me what’s going on inside of me
(Whats going on)
I despise my own behavior
(Despise my own behavior)
This only serves to confirm my suspicions
That I’m still a man in need of a Savior

I wanna be in the Light
as You are in the Light
I wanna shine like the stars
in the Heavens
Oh, Lord be my light
and be my Salvation
’cause all I want is to be in the Light
All I want to be is in the Light (3x)

[There’s no other place I want to be]
[No other place that I can see]
[A place to be that’s just right]
[Someday I’m gonna be in the Light]
[You are in the Light]
[That’s where I need to be]
[That’s right where I need to be]

Thanks for taking me back! It doesn’t seem like that song has been around that long. I’m getting old. :)

  2. Matt Says:

It’s worth noting that DC Talk didn’t write the song. The original recording came from noted artist and producer Charlie Peacock (e.g. the guy who brought you Sarah Masen and Switchfoot, among others). While his recording’s production sounds a little too synth-heavy and dated these days, I’ve always preferred his lyric on the break – it completes the through from 1 John much better than DCT’s version does. If you’re casting about looking for christian music that makes you think a little bit, check out Peacock’s body of work.

  3. Randy Peterman Says:

Matt’s right: Charlie Peacock was the author and original artist… that said, it is still a great song over all. I think you might also like the challenging lyrics of Steve Taylor if you’re going back looking for older songs :) You may also like Grover Levi who unfortunately didn’t have a long music career and who may possibly doing coaching now for some university basketball team. Go figure.

That’s interesting guys, I didn’t know that. I’m big on lyrics. I like songs with a good sounds and deep meaning. While he never grew to big following, I always liked Michael Card. I’ll have to check out the suggestions you’ve made…thanks!

I always appreciate your Sunday posts. We seem to have very similar taste in music. :)
