Sunday Lyrics – Next Thing You Know

While writing my article on teens and money this, the song “Next Thing You Know” by Matthew West kept popping into my head. I asked my wife this morning before writing this post what her favorite contemporary Christian song was, and she said “Next Thing You Know“. Not being one to think there are many coincidences in life, I figured I should use that song for this Sunday Lyrics posting.
So, in the spirit of teens, here’s the lyrics to Matthew West’s very popular and unique song “Next Thing You Know” from his hit album from 2005, History. You can listen to the song by watching this great YouTube video:
I remember when I was thirteen
I saw a picture on my TV screen
The Reverend Billy Graham and the people sing Just As I Am
And I felt like You were talking to me
And the whole world seemed to fade away
Until I heard my mother say
Son, are you ok? Do you wanna pray?
And that became the hour I first believed
Chorus:
And next thing you know
Im high and flying, next thing you know
My heart is in Your hands, next thing you know
There is no denying, next thing you know
Im a brand new man
Well I wish I could say I always stayed right there
And I did until my freshman year
But the world was pulling me along way from thirteen
And You were calling but I didnt hear
Still I knew there was something more
So one day my knees hit the dorm room floor
I said If Youre there and if You really care
Come and talk to me like I was thirteen
Chorus:
I Got a picture in my head today
Of how Heaven might look someday
I see the people there so I pull up a chair
And their stories they blew me away
Cause I can see it on every face
Their evidence of grace
And as I listen it occurs to me
Everybodys got their own thirteen
So whats your story about His glory?
You gotta find your place in the history of grace

I really like how you speak about your Christian faith and money at the same time.
Sometimes for me I get caught up with making money and surrendering to Jesus Christ.

Hi Steve! Thank you. Personally, I think it’s fine to make money, just don’t make it the priority in your life. The Bible is full of lessons on managing money and gaining wealth, the trick is to rule it and not let it rule you.
I also think it’s important to not store your treasure here on earth (Matthew 6:19). My intent once I get out of debt is to build up enough wealth to sustain myself once I retire. Once I achieve that, I intend to start giving and donating like crazy.
My dream would be to build a top-notch orphanage Guatemala for orphaned children. We adopted our daughter from there, and it was a life changing event for us.

I like that song too and I’m just now thinking that I haven’t heard it on the radio lately.
Glad you like my baptism photo and thanks for the attribution!
