@Lynnae – Great advice, and good and trustworthy agent is a good thing to have. I have had the same insurance agent since I was 15…so for 18 years? Wow…I’m old…

@KMC – Thanks!

@plonkee – It’s not hard, just expensive. If you have a pre-existing condition or you are older it can become VERY expensive. If you have a serious condition though even getting insurance can be difficult. Just remember, if you don’t have insurance you’re saving money, but one big unexpected tragedy and your could be in a dire financial situation.

Yeah. Clearly I know nothing whatsoever about health insurance (and am more than content to live vicariously through you guys) but how hard is it to get independent insurance when you really, really need it i.e. when you are already not healthy?

We are among the uninsured trying to get insurance now. It really helps to talk to a licensed agent in your state. A good agent will give you good data to back up what they tell you. In my case, our agent told us about a couple of companies that had low rates, but the insurance was basically worthless. He sent us to our state’s insurance department, and sure enough, the companies he mentioned had terrible ratings.

A good agent can also help you negotiate with the insurance company, should any problems arrive.
