Thanks for sharing this with us, it does make you realise how temporal our life here on earth is and how important it is to make the right choices in life as they will affect us for eternity. I think having adequate insurance is critical, but it should also be a balanced approach.

Thanks for good advice. I work with the disabled and their stories help me to realize how lucky I've been to have my small problems.

Everyone should get independent health insurance coverage with a major provider when they are healthy, so they will not be tied to any job or employer. It can't be canceled when you get a health problem. It is also true that your bills will usually be reduced by about 33%, as Rob Y wrote.

Definitely remembering that bad things happen to good people. Fortunately, I'm pretty well insured, and thanks to the wonders of the NHS I am assured free and reasonable medical care. But its a timely reminder to check out the less fun parts of money.

Thanks to those of you that have sent me emails about the typos and name confusions in the article. This is what I get for writing this early in the morning :-) I have re-proofed it and corrected most if not all the mistakes.

My apologies, this is not the quality I like to deliver to you. Lesson learned, will proof read better in the future!

Glblguy, thanks for sharing such a touching story and remind me (us) how vulnerable we really are. We should just count our blessings more and not focus so much on what we don't have. Thank you.

One more pitch (or tip) on health insurance... even if you get the high deductible (ex. $10,000), you are doing 2 things. First, you are protecting yourself from a major, major disaster. But secondly (and more immediate) is that you will get the neogotiated rates between the insurance company and the health care providers. Even if you never reach your deductible (and hopefully you don't with this kind of coverage), you can still benefit greatly by having this type of "junk" coverage. I've had many bills reduced and even a 2nd doctor (assistant) removed from the bill because it was disallowed. If the insurance disallows something like that then you don't make up the difference... instead the health care provider writes it off.

@Erin, actually "Steve" was a fictitious name too :-) I decided to change it later as I know a Steve and didn't want someone to assume. Just missed that one :-) Thanks for catching it though, I appreciate it.

@MITBeta - Thank you. Yes I can. Right now, I have a 30 year term, and I can increase it up to a certain amount, which is well beyond what I would ever need. Good point on your job/insurance dependency...definitely agree that is something that should be considered.

Now, with that said, I get some privileges with State Farm that not everyone gets, as I have been a customer of theirs since I was 16, and my father a customer since he way very young.

Nice article. Can you increase your State Farm life insurance if you switch jobs? If not, you might want to look into more insurance outside of your employer while you are still fairly young. It's probably cheaper through your work, but your work could disappear tomorrow, along with you insurance.
